Inbox Repair Tool Failed To Fix 'An Error Has Occurred …'!

Microsoft Outlook is a great application but its PST file where all its data are stored gets corrupt very often due to several reasons like power failure, abrupt termination of the application, Outlook error and so on. To fix up the minor corruptions of the PST file Microsoft has provide an efficient built-in utility called Scanpst.exe or Inbox Repair Tool. But it is to be noted that all the PST corruptions can not be resolved using this in-built utility so user need to use any third party software for this purpose which could scan the corrupt PST file efficiently and restore the related data in a safe and secure location.

To understand a situation let’s consider a scenario where you try to start Outlook application to access the data stored in the PST file, but during this process you encountered an error message reporting that PST file has corrupted. To repair the corrupt PST file you run the Inbox Repair Tool or Scanpst.exe but it fail to do so with an error message which says –

"An error has occurred which caused the scan to be stopped. No changes have been made to the scanned file."

The above mentioned error message might have caused due to two possible reasons –

    • User must be using an Outlook 97-2002 PST file and Inbox Repair Tool cannot work on file bigger than 2 GB in size.
    • PST file is severely damaged and can not be repaired using built-in Inbox Repair Tool.

So, in order to resolve this issue and to repair the damaged or corrupt PST file user need to perform below mentioned steps –

    • If the PST file is oversized i.e. its size is more than 2GB then user first need to reduce its size using 2GB Truncation (Pst2gb.exe) utility. This tool will crop the larger PST file under 2GB which can then be repaired using Inbox Repair Tool.
    • But in case the oversized PST file is not an issue then user need to opt for any third party PST Repair software which will effectively scan the entire PST file and recover all the inaccessible data from it. However, if the backup of the corrupt PST file is available then restoring the backup will certainly resolve the issue for sure.

So, if you also got error message 'Error has occurred caused repair stopped …' while accessing PST file of MS Outlook and Inbox Repair Tool failed to resolve the issue then just opt for any third party tool and resolve this PST issue forever.
